Etiquette for the Golf Course

Written by admin on February 12, 2009 in Golf Etiquette.

Many people do not know it but there are certain unspoken rules on the golf course that is considered ‘golf etiquette’. If you do not know these things then you may be making a fool of yourself and not even realize it. Many of the laws of golf etiquette include considerations of the course, pace, and safety.

One of the things that many people don’t think about is the pace of their play. If you are enjoying the prelit Christmas trees and the way the golf course is decorated during the holiday that is great but you have to consider the people behind you. It is nice to look at the artificial Christmas trees but lollygagging around is not acceptable in golf. Never make the people behind you wait for any reason, especially because you are appreciating the artificial Christmas trees. A good pace should always be maintained if you are playing on a professional course. Try and keep up with the people who are playing in front of you. If you actually are going to stand around staring at the beauty of the course and decorations and things then wave the people behind you to go ahead and take their turn. This will give you time to do what you need to do and be practicing good etiquette.

Many people who do not know proper golf etiquette often don’t take care of the course. You need to care for the course so it continues to be a nice place to play. You should always keep your golf cart away from hazards and the greens. If you make a divot then you should repair it. Also, if there are ball marks on the green then you should repair them too. After you hit in a sand trap it is also your job to rake them to erase marks from hitting, marks to the area, and ball marks. If there are ‘cart path only’ signs then you should always obey them. Never drive around a golf course off of a pre-determined path. Also, pay attention to the 90 degree rule.

Playing safe is a part of golf etiquette but it should be common sense. Some of the things you can do to create a safe environment is keep your distance from others when you are swinging your club. You should never swing in the direction of other players. Debris could fly up into the air and cause an eye injury to another or something else. Also, if there are people in front of you and in range then you should wait for them to move away before you take your shot. If your ball does look like it is headed in the direction of another player, you are supposed to shout out ‘Fore!’

When playing golf there are many unspoken rules on the course that you should learn. This allows the environment to be friendly for everyone, the courses to remain beautiful, and everyone to be safe. Improper etiquette can cause you to be kicked off of a course or it may be recommended that you do not return.
